SUMMARY:Rob Reiner in Conversation with Alan Zweibel: The Story of Spinal Tap
DESCRIPTION:Join award-winning director Rob Reiner as he tells the story behind his rock ’n’ roll comedy classic\, This Is Spinal Tap\, and it’s long awaited just released sequel\, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues — a conversation about his new book\, A Fine Line Between Stupid and Clever: The Story of Spinal Tap\, with award-winning comedy writer Alan Zweibel.   \nIn person and streaming. \nIn 1984\, Rob Reiner teamed up with comedians Christopher Guest\, Michael McKean\, and Harry Shearer to create a new kind of comedy — a fake documentary about ficticious rock ‘n’ roll band called Spinal Tap. The film\, This Is Spinal Tap\, pioneered a new genre — the mockumentary — and has since evolved from a beloved cult film into a cinematic landmark that has taken its place in the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry. Now\, for the first time\, Reiner shares the story of how he and his friends cranked their low-budget indie film up to 11 — creating a comedy classic with a life of its own. \nJust in time for the release of the long-awaited Spinal Tap II\, hear Reiner and Zweibel discuss the genesis of the film\, the band\, and a new kind of comedy — from exploding drummers to collaborating with real-life rock legends like Elton John and Paul McCartney to stories from behind the scenes\, and much more. \nPurchased in-person tickets include an autographed copy of the book which when you flip over\, you’ll discover the B-side: Smell the Book\, an oral history by Tap’s own Nigel Tufnel\, David St. Hubbins\, and Derek Smalls\, conducted by director Marty DiBergi. \nhttps://www.92ny.org/event/rob-reiner

SUMMARY:TBA September 2024\, PALEY CENTER - Confronting Prejudice with Laughter: The Continuing Impact of Jewish Comedy.
DESCRIPTION:TICKET INFO COMING SOON! \nThe event is part of the ongoing PaleyImpact series\, Media’s Role in Combating Antisemitism and will take place at the Paley Center in New York. September date TBA \nFifties Jewish comedy was undeniably inspirational to a whole generation of comedians\, also having major impact on American comic history. Developed in New York’s Catskills resorts frequented by Jewish families\, it resonated with their shared cultural experiences and the Yiddish language. The jokes focused on everyday struggles\, family dynamics\, and self-deprecating humor\, creating a sense of connection and shared laughter. For Jews\, facing discrimination and antisemitism in society\, the resorts offered a safe space for laughter and release. Younger Jewish comedians employ similar type of jokes revolving around daily trials and family problems\, while also referencing contemporary concerns\, notably the rise in antisemitism. \nThis special event will bring together classic comedians trained in the fifties tradition together with comedians who are now updating the legacy of this comedy for the younger generation. Panelists will explore why this relatable humor never goes out of style\, but constantly needs to evolve\, helping to fight hate and prejudice with laughter over daily and family woes that we all share.

SUMMARY:Anthology Film Archives - Ernie Kovacs: TV Comedy's First Auteur
DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL SCREENING! \n\nJoin “Ernie in Kovacsland” co-authors Ben Model & Josh Mills along with guests Alan Zweibel\, Heather Hendershot & NPR’s David Bianculli as we screen\, discuss and sign copies of the new book at the Anthology Film Archives in NYC on Saturday Oct 14 at 7:30pm! \nAnthology Film Archives and the Estate of Ernie Kovacs join forces to celebrate the publication of “Ernie in Kovacsland: Writings\, Drawings\, and Photographs from Television’s Original Genius” (Fantagraphics)\, with an evening featuring a program of highlights from Kovacs’s TV career. \nThe influence of Kovacs’s highly visual and often patently surreal and Dada-esque comedic aesthetic can be seen not only in his offbeat sensibility but also in his radical editing and special effects techniques. Kovacs’s mark is apparent in everything from MONTY PYTHON’S FLYING CIRCUS\, MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER\, PEE-WEE’S PLAYHOUSE\, KIDS IN THE HALL\, and TIM AND ERIC AWESOME SHOW\, GREAT JOB!\, to the work of experimental film- and video-makers such as Owen Land\, William Wegman\, Michael Smith\, Trisha Baga\, and many\, many others. Ernie Kovacs utilized the “vision” in “television” more than any other comedian on TV in the 1950s and early 1960s. Surprisingly\, having no nightclub background and having come from radio\, his leap to television in 1950 unleashed a uniquely cinematic approach to comedy at a time when all TV was broadcast live. Kovacs was never popular enough to have a hit show but had a loyal following that allowed him to stay on the air\, bouncing from network to network throughout his career from 1950-62. His body of work was cut short when he died in a car crash at age 42\, but his impact remains immeasurable across the realms of television\, comedy\, and experimental media. \nFor the Anthology evening\, we’ll be focusing on some of the sketches and “sound-into-sight” music pieces that showcase Kovacs’s cinematic uses of the television medium as a canvas for his uniquely absurdist humor. \nThe program will be hosted by the co-authors/editors/collaborators of “Ernie in Kovacsland”: Josh Mills\, executor of the Kovacs estate and son of Edie Adams; and Ben Model\, the archivist of the Ernie Kovacs/Edie Adams collection; and will feature a panel comprising Mills; Model; television writer\, author\, playwright\, and screenwriter Alan Zweibel (Saturday Night Live; It’s Garry Shandling’s Show; Curb Your Enthusiasm); television critic David Bianculli (NPR’s “Fresh Air”); and author\, MIT Professor\, and media historian Heather Hendershot (“When the News Broke: Chicago 1968 and the Polarizing of America”).
